Physics
In Mid-March 2009 I joined the research group of Professor Blügel at the Institute of Solid State Research (IFF) at Research Centre Jülich.
In March 2004 I started my Ph.D. studies in the reseach group of Professor L. Hao Tjeng (Lehrstuhl für angewandte Physik, II. Physikalisches Institut, Universität zu Köln, Zülpicher Str. 77, D-50937 Köln). I graduated with a Ph.D. on 25 June 2008, but stayed until February 2009 in Cologne. (L. Hao Tjeng meanwhile moved to the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids in Dresden.)
Between 2003 and 2004 I was in the group of Professor Eberhard K. U.Groß (known as Hardy Gross
; Lehrstuhl für theoretische Physik, Physics Department, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany) where I wrote my diploma thesis time-dependent electron localization function
(see publications). (Hardy Gross is now at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle.)
Between 1998 and 2004 I studied physics at the Freie Universität Berlin, with a short intermezzo at the Dipartimento di Fisica of the Università di Bologna for the spring term of 2001.
Publications
Here you can find all my scientific publications; I wrote also a couple tiny articles in mid 1998 [two-months internship] for Berliner Morgenpost (a Berlin daily newspaper) and I managed to get even into a PRL (74, 5244; 1995) during school time (albeit only in the acknowledgement) – you see I started early.

Computers
Between 2000 and 2004 I joined the computer administration service (Zentrale EDV, ZEDV) as student assistant; I mainly co-administrated the Unix systems (Tru64 Unix, (first) FreeBSD and (then) Debian Linux), but also worked on the webserver.
Some other work items and links related to computers (and some also related to physics):
- Hybrid, version 2007-07-24 (GPL/MPL/LGPL): Calculates the hybridization based on Slater-Koster and on Harrison's rule; this is then expanded into spherical harmonics.
- GCC Nightly Builds for x86_64 (AMD64, Intel64/em64t)
- PLOT programs under Linux. I've still to find the ideal software, but here are some links
- Gnuplot – my favouried since scriptable, quick and using postscript enhanced or mpost it is also quite flexible.
- QtiPlot – a real Origin clone which works under Linux and Windows, looks quite promissing, but has still to go some way. It has a fork named SciDAVis.
- LabPlot – seems to be actively developed and quite powerful, but I don't like the graphical interface.
- SciGraphica – dead since 2001, but seems to be reviving in the last months of 2004; I never tested it.
- Grace (decent of ACE/gr = Xmgr) – in principle a nicely working plot program, but I never liked it since I failed to get used to the user interface.
- Origin – a rather expensive Windows program; depending on the its version and the one of WINE/CrossOver Office it might work quite well; I tried Origin 7.5 Demo, but I couldn't install it, Origin 6.0 on the other hand seemes to work reasonable well. Since it is expensive and not scriptable, I never really used it, but for most experimentalists I've met it is really indispensible
- Igor – another Windows plot program, I've never used or tested; some swear by it as others do for Origins. No idea whether it runs using WINE
- Others: Mathematica, Maple and other mathematical tools have ploting functionalites; special purpose or small (?) programs exists as well (KPlot, XGraph, XGRAPH, kmPlot, OpenDX etc.). In addition, several libraries allow the direct creation of plots, e.g. CERN's Root.
- Qt class for WMF Export makes WMF export as easy
- Linux Libertine Font: Currently my favoured font, created by Phil Poll. I maintain an Inofficial Linux-Liberine-Font Page
- Linux Standard Base: Since I wrote several init scripts, I became interested in this section of the LSB. Most ideas are now in LSB 2.0, but the test cases are still to be written.
- Bugzilla: In order to track bugs at the ZEDV, I set up a bugzilla; it was never really used, but I ended up writing patches and
maintaining
the Bugzilla-de project.
- xmotd: In order to annoy, well, to inform the users, I wrote a small perl program which displays (new) messages when one logs in - and stays quite otherwise.
- Octopus and optwo: During my diploma theses I used Octopus to calculate the TDELF, but I contributed only a few patches (mostly documentation).
optwo
is my own child, but this Fortran9x program is not that facy; this simple optimal-control program, which takes the potential from octopus and works only for cylindrical molecules, is available upon request.
- ConTEXt: When I need to typeset something, I use ConTeXt rather than LaTeX or a WordProcessor. (I contributed only little.)
- Betatesting: I think I'm rather good at beta testing software. Until pdftex appeared, I tried to get a working ps2pdf by bugging Peter Deutsch (creator of Ghostscript). Well, it worked rather well. Other than that I'm mainly a SUSE Linux beta tester.
