6.3 Handling of several instances of fsc2

Since version 2.4.0 several instances of fsc2 can be run simultaneously. This, of course, could lead to problems when two instances of fsc2 would try to use the same device at the same time. To avoid that devices (or groups of devices) get locked when an experiment is started and only released when it ends. Thus it is possible that an experiment gets stopped with an error message indicating that a lock could not be obtained. In that case a different instance of fsc2 is still using the corresponding device (or group of devices).

Locking is mostly done via UUCP type lock file that (unless configured differently at installation) reside in `/var/lock'. All devices connected via USB (except USB-serial converter, those are treated like serial port devices) currently are locked together, i.e. only on instance of fsc2 can access USB devices at a time. The same holds for devices connected via RULBUS. Devices connected via GPIB, LAN or serial ports are locked individually as are devices realized as PCI cards.
